This talk discusses some applications with which a bit of creative key management can give unique functionality. One application is where data can be given an expiration date, and even though backups still exist, once the expiration date occurs the data is unrecoverable.

Another is the ability to make sensitive data on laptops disappear if the laptop is lost or stolen, and be completely recovered when the laptop is found.

Another is the ability to create badges with public key pairs, in such a way that the private keys are recoverable if necessary, but no state is needed in order to remember what keys have been assigned.
